How to fix my street

How to fix my street

I live in a street with three large schools. Every morning and evening it’s chaos in my street. The bus throws all the pupils on the cycle path. Pootpaths are not wide enough. The pupils cross the street and then cars get stuck in traffic. Students step out of the cars and walk the ‘last mile’ to school.

Surprisingly it’s not unsafe. It’s chaos but bacause of that cars cannot drive fast. It’s annoying to me and others living in my street that between 8.05 and 8.25 we are stuck. There is really no point in leaving by car then. Wait until 8.30 and it’s so quiet – the schools have absorbed the students and the buses and cars have vanished. Saturdays, sundays and on holidays it’s a fairly quit street as well.

So the problem is this chaos, 15 to 20 minutes in the morning and in the evening it’s pretty much the same. What would be nice is to reorganise the space a little so that in these busy moments the cyclists and pedestrians get a little more space.

So there’s my goal: fix the chaos and give more space to the kids and inhabitants on foor or by bike. I see two scenario’s. Either we reorganise the street permananently and take out most traffic but keep some access or we leave it prety much as it is and take out all traffic only twice a day. The first scenario is “fix the mix”, the latter is “the schoolstreet project”.

Let’s get designing now!
